Health and Wellbeing Screening for Construction Workers

Construction work can be taxing physical labour, involving long hours and high amounts of physical exertion. Often, this can have a negative impact on health and safety for construction workers, creating large amounts of strain on both physical and mental wellbeing.

With workplaces becoming more aware and vigilant of staff wellbeing, we understand the requirement for proactive measures. Therefore, Wright Medics offer on-site medical screening facilities, tailored specifically to the unique health challenges that are often caused by working on a construction site.

The hazards of construction work to staff health

Construction site staff are consistently exposed to potential health hazards, including intense physical strain that can present long-term health effects. Some of these potential hazards include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical strain
  • Exposure to hazardous materials
  • Operating machinery
  • Noise pollution

These hazards can pose long-term health consequences to staff. Respiratory issues, chronic pain and hearing loss are all potential effects of working on a construction site. Not to mention, the physically demanding nature of construction work can often contribute to musculoskeletal problems – occasionally causing chronic pain and discomfort. Thus, it is important for staff to undergo regular health screenings to identify issues early, and ultimately to get the issues treated.

Although construction workers are provided with personal protective equipment, this is not sufficient in preventing every issue from developing. It is critical, as an employer, to take proactive measures in safeguarding construction worker health. Regular screening is paramount in detecting potential health concerns before they have a chance to escalate.

Proactive approach to staff wellbeing

Healthy and happy staff will always contribute more effectively to their workplace. A preventative approach will not only benefit staff wellbeing, but also the overall success of the construction company. Health concerns that are addressed promptly are less likely to result in downtime – increasing productivity and employee attendance.

Reduced absenteeism will reduce the impact and disruption to lines of production and construction site projects. The detection of issues early on by our paramedic clinicians will further reduce the need for ongoing medical appointments and recovery periods. Thus, prioritising construction worker health and carrying out regular checkups is not only beneficial for the wellbeing of the individual, but the overall efficiency of the company.

Tailored health screening services

Wright Medics offer a unique approach to health screening services across the UK – we provide tailored on-site medical facility to suit construction environments. Not only do these facilities act as conventional first aid stations, but they also stand as comprehensive assessment and treatment centres. Our registered clinicians are aware of the typical long-term issues suffered by construction workers, and can tailor assessments in light of this.

These stations also serve as quiet, confidential areas where construction staff can openly voice health and wellbeing concerns, and seek the advice of a fully qualified, registered clinicians. See our article on ‘Enhancing On-Site Construction Worker Safety with Wright Medic’s Paramedic Clinicians.

Wright Medics also offer ‘Return to Work’ health assessments. These assessments are carried out by our practicing paramedic clinicians, and assess a worker’s readiness to return to work after an injury or illness.

Particularly with the demanding physical exertion involved in construction work, Return to Work health assessments are important for both the employee and employer. They provide peace of mind and assurance that the member of staff is physically able to return to work, and minimises the potential for further workplace accidents or injuries.

The screening services involve the use of a 3-Lead or 12-Lead ECGs (electrocardiograms), which are diagnostic tests used to monitor and assess the electrical activity of the heart. This can provide an early diagnoses of heart conditions, or other underlying issues.
