School sports days are full of joy, adrenaline, and excitement; the last thing kids think about on a sports day is health and safety. However, accidents can still happen, especially on a fast-paced sports day.
Because of this, first aid for sports days is essential. Teachers and volunteers need practical first aid training to handle any accident, including minor bruises and more serious conditions.
The Importance of First Aid Training for School Sport Days
First aid training is crucial for a school sports day for several reasons, including:
- It means teachers and volunteers can respond to major and minor injuries quickly. This is beneficial for injuries that need immediate attention, such as significant cuts
- It can reduce panic among the kids and parents
- It’s educational for students; they will learn the importance of safety and the basics of injury prevention
- It is vital for complying with school safety regulations
- It allows the event to run more efficiently
- It allows trained staff to be knowledgeable and confident in case of a medical emergency.
We aim to increase safety culture, especially during a hectic sports day. All teaching staff should be aware of potential hazards and confident in handling them effectively.
Wright Medics First Aid Certifications for Teachers
Wright Medics offer two significant first-aid certifications; both first-aid courses are valid for teachers in the UK. Our accreditations include:
- The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Certificate—We deliver this course over 3 days (separate or consecutive). It covers multiple health and safety topics, including treating cuts and bruises and handling a medical emergency
- The First Aid at Work (FAW) Certificate—This is a more basic option; it only takes one day to deliver. It covers basic first-aid skills that allow teachers to carry out essential first-aid practices.
Additionally, both of our courses are officially accredited by QN and Ofqual.
Legal Requirements
It is a legal requirement for UK schools to have comprehensive first aid response. Multiple guidelines and regulations govern this requirement, including:
- Health and Safety Regulations 1981
- Department for Education Guidance
- Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014.
To ensure you remain compliant with first aid requirements, you must undergo consistent first aid training. Our courses are valid for three years, so training must be undertaken every 3 years to maintain your first aid certification. We also recommend multiple teachers attend the course so a qualified person will always be there to help if there is a medical emergency.
